"Escape from NY, 1776": History and Beer at Lasting Joy Brewery

The Dutchess County Historic Tavern Trail makes its next stop at Lasting Joy Brewery on September 4 with "History Happy Hour: Escape from NY, 1776 Edition." County Historian William P. Tatum III continues his ongoing series presenting the American Revolution as it unfolded locally and across New York exactly 250 years ago.

This installment covering the period around the 1776 retreat from New York City, one of the more precarious stretches of the war for the Continental Army. The talk is free, open to the public, and available both in person and via Zoom, with donations encouraged for the event's partner organization, Historic Red Hook.

The Tavern Trail is a collaboration between the Dutchess County Department of History, local historical societies, and a rotating roster of food and beverage partners, each installment held at a different historic location with a short presentation on a specific episode of local history. Tatum has described the program's appeal as a way of exploring the links between history, cuisine, and local culture that make the region distinctive, using its most iconic buildings and landscape as the backdrop.

Lasting Joy was opened in June 2022 by husband-and-wife team Alex and Emily Wenner on a 31-acre farm property just outside Tivoli, the brewery occupies a converted barn reimagined by Auver Architecture into a light-filled tasting room with floor-to-ceiling windows. The beer leans traditional and hyper-local—a Czech-style pilsner made with New York malt floor-malted in Germantown, and "I Lov It" (Tivoli spelled backward), created originally for the village's 150th anniversary celebration.
