After Two Breakout Hollywood Scores, Son Lux Previews New Personal Album at Mass MoCA

Son Lux plays the Hunter Center at Mass MoCA on September 12, six days ahead of the release of their ninth studio album, "Out Into," on September 18. After the show, the band holds a reception and meet-and-greet in the Research and Development Store, signing copies of two new vinyl releases of "Out Into."

Founder Ryan Lott has described "Out Into" as a departure from the band's usual reputation for splendor and sweep: a punchy, detail-minded suite of songs born from moments of collective improvisation. "We're going places we've never gone before in terms of energy, attitude, color," Lott says. "And it all comes from having reverence for those initial sparks, for treating the voice memo version of the idea as the most sacred iteration."

The shift comes after a stretch of painstaking, high-profile film work—the band scored A24's Best Picture winner Everything Everywhere All at Once in 2022, earning two Academy Award nominations and a BAFTA nod, with a companion score album featuring collaborations with Mitski, David Byrne, Randy Newman, and Moses Sumney, and followed that with Marvel's Thunderbolts* in 2025. That cinematic work broadened the band's reach, but it also left Lott, Bhatia, and Chang yearning to make an album that felt more immediate and direct. The result, per the band, lives in a paradoxical zone between big and small, spontaneous and refined, experimental and pop-spirited. "We always want to walk that line of strangeness and familiarity in a way that's exciting for the listener," says Chang, "because it's exciting for us."

A related video installation, "Son Lux and Alex Cook: Out Into Us (Slow Down)," opens the same day the concert takes place.
